What is FeLV?
Feline leukemia virus is a retrovirus that infects cats. It can be transmitted from infected cats when the transfer of saliva or nasal secretions is involved. If not defeated by the animal’s immune system, the virus weakens the cat’s immune system, which can lead to diseases which can be lethal.
Because FeLV is cat-to-cat contagious, FeLV+ cats should only live with other FeLV+ cats.

Fortunately, adopting a FeLV+ cat is an incredibly safe and rewarding experience if done the right way.
What should I know?
* Feline leukemia (FeLV+) is a virus that is contagious among other cats. It can cause a weakened immune system which can leave cats/kittens susceptible to other illnesses and early death if they don’t receive protection and care.
* FeLV+ cats often have a shorter lifespan, but can still live “normal” healthy lives. Many cats with FeLV have a good quality of life and can live many years in good health if the virus and their symptoms are managed well.
*Because FeLV is contagious to other cats, we recommend these cats go to homes where they’ll be the only cat or to a home that already has a cat with FeLV.
*FeLV is not transmissible to humans or dogs.
